Safety tips

Protect your computer, your data and your money when renting.

Owners: protect your machine

  • Create a separate, non-administrator OS user for renters. Log out of email, browsers, password managers and cloud drives.
  • Use one-time or session passwords and change them after each rental. Turn off unattended access when you're not renting.
  • Prefer containers or virtual machines for compute rentals, and wipe them afterwards.
  • State clearly what is not allowed (e.g. crypto mining, illegal content, attacks on other systems). The community rules apply to every rental.

Renters: protect your data

  • Assume the owner can see what you do. Don't enter personal passwords or upload sensitive data to a rented machine.
  • Delete your files and log out of every service at the end of the session.

Payments

  • Agree on the price, duration and refund rules in writing (in RentPC messages) before paying.
  • Prefer payment methods with buyer protection. For long rentals, pay in smaller installments.
  • Be wary of anyone who pushes you to move off-platform immediately, asks for gift cards, or offers prices that are too good to be true.
